A Modern Interpretation

Dream House on a Hillside – Contemporary Hipped Roof Design

Anyone planning to build a detached house in Germany often has to adhere to strict rules due to development plans. But what happens if you want to build a modern, aesthetically ambitious house in an area with a conservative development plan? In the Taunus region, a new project shows how architectural sophistication, creative courage and respect for the environment can be used to create a house that stands out without causing offence. The contract for this private house was awarded to the Darmstadt-based architectural firm Gerhard.Architekten, which had already worked successfully with the client on the redesign of a commercial property.

The challenge was to design a home for a five-person family—with ambitious goals. The vision called for a distinctive residence featuring premium sustainable materials, layered spatial relationships, and unmistakable architectural character. Sprawling across 1,728 m², the site sits on a hillside with expansive valley views. This topography became the design's guiding force: rather than fighting the slope, the architects embraced it, making the terrain an integral part of their concept. By working with the natural gradient, they created distinct levels, choreographed spatial flow, and opened the home toward the valley vistas. The restrictive building code mandated classical forms—specifically a hipped roof. The architects reinterpreted this traditional element for contemporary design, achieving harmony with the neighborhood's formal language while charting a new direction. They strategically fragmented the building volume, inserting a central atrium that floods the interior with light and dissolves the boundaries between inside and outside. This subtle subversion of convention unlocked exceptional spatial qualities throughout. The meticulously detailed aluminum composite roof—durable, low-maintenance, and refined—makes a bold statement: it deliberately contrasts with the neighborhood's restraint, establishing presence not through conformity, but through clarity of vision.

Inside, the rooms flow smoothly into one another but are clearly structured. The central living area forms the heart of the house, flanked by individual retreats. Together with the sauna in the master bathroom and roof terraces, this creates places of tranquillity and well-being. Generous glazing also opens up the view of the valley and nature. High-quality, minimalist materials dominate the interior, such as seamlessly trowelled flooring on the ground and basement floors, herringbone parquet without skirting boards on the upper floor, flush-mounted block frames, high-quality wallpaper and a delicate cantilevered staircase made of oak. In the sanitary areas, the eye is drawn to large-format tiles, beautifully designed objects and high-quality fittings. Nothing was left to chance in the outdoor area either: in collaboration with a garden and landscape designer, a concept was developed that picks up on the architectural lines and translates them into the surroundings. Overall, the project shows that good architecture does not always have to be loud to make a statement. It can be guided by rules – and question them at the same time.
