Harborside Transformation
Reimagining Spa and Fitness at Michel
Over the past few years, Meridian Spa & Fitness has modernized its brand identity and refreshed its corporate design. At Meridian am Michel, the challenge was particularly demanding: the facility was already 25 years old, operates with minimal space, and the renovation had to take place while the business remained open. Architect Jasmin Daémi-Avval, Senior Manager of Project Development at Meridian, and her team set out to ground the intimate Michel location firmly within its neighborhood and give it a distinct character—one that stands apart from Meridian's larger Hamburg locations.
The organically curved ceilings still seem to embrace every guest entering the fitness area. Yet somehow, a breeze from the nearby landing stages has swept through, bringing clarity and expansive views. The design team deliberately drew inspiration from the harbor itself: rusty trapezoidal sheet metal forms the repositioned wall elements, lounge tiles evoke the historic Elbe Tunnel, and repurposed oil barrels punctuate the relaxation space.
Hamburg residents will instantly recognize the cherished silhouettes of iconic landmarks—captured by photographer Jörg Rothhaar—that appear as "mirror images" woven throughout the fitness floor. The Elbe bridges emerge between the equipment, the lightship comes into view, the Baumwall bridge stands sentinel, and the graceful Kampnagel cranes seem to dance alongside the machines. Most notably, St. Michael's Church—the facility's namesake—greets visitors directly through the windows. These architectural references, thoughtful spatial refinements, and the sophisticated lighting scheme by Licht 01 Lighting Design have completely transformed the room's character.
The redesigned cardio zone features premium equipment outfitted with full digital connectivity, including streaming capabilities. Acoustic paneling keeps equipment noise to a minimum. A carefully curated functional training area provides everything needed for serious athletic conditioning. Strategic space reorganization has made room for the highly popular and efficient eGym circuit. The adjacent consultation zone is gracefully screened by living green walls. A welcoming lounge encourages connection and recovery breaks—still the go-to gathering spot where trainers and members connect throughout the day.
