Vibrant Contrasts
Where Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Sculptural Freedom
Maria Cepissakova grew up surrounded by art and craft—it was practically in her DNA. Born in Košice, Slovakia, she spent her childhood between her father's studio and her grandfather's wood carving workshop. From 2000 to 2004, she studied ceramics and porcelain at the School of Applied Arts in Košice, followed by fine art studies at Munich's Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. Since 2013, she has operated as an independent artist from her own studio in Munich's Westend district, dedicating herself to merging time-honored craftsmanship with contemporary sculptural thinking. Her porcelain creations are entirely handmade: each piece begins at the wheel, then undergoes individual refinement across multiple stages. Deliberate form and vibrant contrasts define her distinctive aesthetic. The Kontrapunkt Pur series exemplifies this approach—cups and vases available in three finishes: pristine white, deep blue, or deep black, with transparent glaze interiors that create striking visual tension. Her experimental work takes a different tack: layered clay and porcelain masses are hand-colored in their raw state, making the final result—emerging from high-temperature firing—perpetually surprising. Beyond functional ceramics, she creates jewelry and ceramic reliefs, consistently blending the meditative tradition of hand-throwing with bold sculptural intervention. Cepissakova regularly hosts ceramic workshops at her studio.
