Light for an Urban Oasis
Thoughtful lighting design reveals the true character of space and material
Sometimes the most compelling design challenges aren't about grand public spaces—they're about creating magic in intimate private settings. Such was the case when architect and lighting designer Jochen Schröder of unique.works took on the task of illuminating a penthouse apartment in Altona. Its roof terrace is the couple's sanctuary year-round, a tranquil retreat surrounded by lush greenery where, come summer, the view opens onto nothing but sky and open air. The new lighting design celebrates this unobstructed perspective. Warm tones harmonise perfectly with the textured clinker façade and abundant plantings, establishing the overall mood. Subtly positioned, meticulously glare-controlled light points integrate seamlessly with the architecture, providing gentle illumination at key moments while honouring the beauty of the space's defining elements—climbing vines, the rich reds of autumn foliage, and the warm earthiness of hand-fired brick. The interplay of material textures emerges softly and naturally. The enchanting view of the evening and night sky remains uncompromised by glare or unwanted light spill. Strategic downward-only lighting eliminates light pollution entirely. The dining table—often the heart of gatherings—presented its own challenge: showcasing food and drink in optimal light while keeping the fixture itself discreetly in the background. Guests needed unobstructed sightlines and flattering illumination on their faces. A minimalist linear luminaire accomplishes this with elegance, and its dimming controls at both ends make it easy to adjust the ambiance directly from the table.
