Surprising in its simplicity

Polygonal spatial forms create a dynamic dialogue between enclosed and open volumes.

The site's prominent urban location inspired Lenz Architects to create an understated residential home for the client family. True to the streetscape, it follows the rhythm of neighboring structures with a simple form: sloped roof, terracotta tiles, doors, and windows that honor local building tradition. Yet a subtle fold in the form introduces sculptural depth and draws attention to the entrance. This restraint—in both form and materials—combined with thoughtfully selected finishes, creates a rich spatial experience within its modest footprint.

The clear geometric composition shapes the building with striking legibility and deliberate material restraint. Inside, the quality of the space reflects the architects' refined understanding of scale, proportion, and the tactile beauty of materials. The exterior walls form a continuous, enveloping shell that allows living areas to flow seamlessly into one another. A modulated window pattern with ventilation elements articulates the façade and frames carefully composed views. Between this outer envelope and an inserted polygonal volume—positioned between floor and ceiling—an interplay of solid and void defines the interior. Two strategic cuts within this volume mark transitions between living zones. An exposed concrete staircase, open stair volume, and soaring void connect ground and upper floors while creating compelling spatial sightlines. Few materials, precisely deployed, reinforce the open spatial logic across both levels. Oak paneling echoes the exposed concrete ceiling and polished screed floor, while these surfaces underscore the spatial composition of the inserted forms.

The clarity of this compact form and minimal envelope is reinforced by 42.5 cm thick solid brick walls. Breathable lime plaster and mineral-based finishes complement the ecological properties of this open-pore construction, establishing a calm, welcoming interior. Every material has been applied with craft precision and finished to reveal its natural character.
