Working together

Flexible, economical, and intelligently designed—living gets better

Multi-unit residential buildings offer a compelling mix of advantages. They foster diversity, bringing together people at different life stages. They make it possible to marry technological progress with resource-conscious living. Architect Ian Shaw's Frankfurt am Main office proves that modern, flexible design can accomplish all of this—and more.

Cantilevered sections extend from the light-yellow, natural Jura marble–clad structure, accommodating living areas on one side and balconies on the other. The building offers two single-family and two multi-family apartments, plus a fully accessible penthouse—a carefully curated mix for residents with diverse needs. All units connect through a shared technical spine—a backbone that anchors the central core and allows living spaces to radiate outward. This approach enables extraordinary spatial flexibility, adapting instantly to each resident's individual requirements. The architecture establishes only a framework, providing the platform for living to unfold. Inside, load-bearing walls stand bare in fair-faced concrete, their surface complemented by the warm, natural tones of untreated oak against soft grey. Floor-to-ceiling doors, expansive windows, and recessed ceiling lighting embody understated elegance—achieved through meticulous craftsmanship.

The building's energy concept is equally straightforward and carefully considered. Two heat pumps powered by renewable electricity provide heating. Hot water, by contrast, is generated through individual instantaneous water heaters at each fixture, which significantly reduces overall heating costs. Ventilation is achieved through windows, all of which can be opened. Additionally, window trickle vents are integrated into the individual window frames and work in conjunction with bathroom ventilation to ensure constant air circulation. Heating, sun protection, and ventilation can all be controlled via an app on the smartphone. And the ceiling lighting responds to specific hand gestures. It almost goes without saying that the parking spaces are equipped with electric charging stations. However, mobility here is understood in a broader sense, which is why each unit has dedicated bicycle storage. Flexibility is thus prioritized not only in living arrangements but also in how residents move about the neighborhood.
