A Slice of Paradise

Rooftop oasis in Kreuzberg: a seaside escape nestled among the treetops

IMAG5938_15_700pixel

The work of grasgrau—a studio specializing in rooftop design and landscaping—demonstrates that Berlin's outdoor living culture extends far beyond the city limits. Today, rooftop conversions are commonplace, and outdoor spaces have become standard in new construction. This striking terrace exemplifies how design expectations for rooftop gardens have evolved. The outdoor sanctuary sits atop a residential conversion in Kreuzberg's Graefekiez district, positioned at the crown of the chestnut trees that flourish in the adjacent courtyard. Surrounded by lush foliage, residents enjoy complete privacy and the enchanting sensation of inhabiting a treehouse in a primeval forest.

The redesign merges both structural and horticultural elements. The floor features new travertine stone slabs—sourced from Europe rather than Asia, unlike the commonly used bankirai planks—chosen for their durability and minimal maintenance demands. Maritime blue paintwork adorns the terrace's side walls, while an elegant corner sofa in trendy Amalfi green echoes the seaside theme. Like furnishings on a yacht, the tufted cushions are upholstered in weather-resistant outdoor fabric. Wood surfaces appear on the balustrade's larch slats, introducing a classic garden element to this otherwise urban setting. Newly installed electrical infrastructure enables wall lighting and power access. At this elevation, sunlight is intense and plant selection becomes crucial. The landscape specialists chose native, drought-resistant species supplied through an automatic irrigation system. The result is distinctly modern—unpretentious and organically balanced. Through thoughtful color palettes, blooms, and abundant greenery, the space evokes emotion and transports residents to vacation mode in the heart of the city.
