Club atmosphere

A hair salon in Schwabing becomes an experience with a special interior design

With a completely new concept, Munich interior architects and interior designers Claudia Kleine and Jörg Kürschner from the Grünwald-based office formstelle have sent the Ponyclub in Hohenzollernstraße on a journey back in time. To feel like you were in a club in Milan in the 1960s and 1970s - that was the wish of Moritz Hannappel, owner of the Munich hairdressing chain Ponyclub, for the comprehensive redesign of his Schwabing salon. "The interesting thing about the project was that, 13 years later, we have now created a completely contrasting design to the concept we created in 2006," says Kürschner.

The previously very bright, large room with lots of white surfaces, a ceiling mirror and the former corporate identity colors of apple green and brown has been transformed into a room that now has a completely different feel with lots of separate rooms and numerous stylish details with a very special atmosphere. Even the entrance offers something extremely unusual for a hairdressing salon: an original old Ligne Roset round sofa has been reupholstered in blackberry red and contrasts with the textile floor in light turquoise. The finely coordinated material concept of brass, natural stone, velvet and walnut makes the room appear warm and inviting throughout. Flexible velvet curtains in curry yellow create small private spaces without dividing the area too much. In the private "bunks", the hairdresser can take care of his customers comprehensively and in detail. "It's all about the experience. You can sit for three hours to be pampered," says Kleine. And that's why the restyling of the rooms doesn't stop on the upper floor: The sanitary rooms in the basement have been adapted to the style upstairs with wallpaper and high-quality furnishing details. A custom-made ornamental brass curtain between the first floor and basement adds a subtly luxurious component to the concept, which is reinforced by the dark natural stone floors made from Spanish Emperador Dark. The special lighting concept makes the room glow. Round, brass-framed mirror lights specially developed by formstelle for the Pony Club were combined with this. Organically curved shelves, a leather-covered bar counter and accessories from the 1960s, such as the golden cranes, complete the harmonious overall concept.
