Club Atmosphere

A hairdressing salon in Schwabing transformed into an experience through distinctive interior design

Munich-based interior architects Claudia Kleine and Jörg Kürschner of formstelle in Grünwald have given the Ponyclub on Hohenzollernstraße a complete reimagining—whisking visitors back to the Milan club scene of the 1960s and 70s. That was the vision of Moritz Hannappel, owner of the Munich Ponyclub hair salon chain, for this comprehensive redesign of his Schwabing location. "What's fascinating about this project," Kürschner explains, "is that we've essentially turned our original 2006 concept on its head—13 years later, we took an entirely opposite approach."

What was once a bright, expansive room dominated by white surfaces, a mirrored ceiling, and corporate greens and browns has been reimagined as an intimate, atmospheric space punctuated by private alcoves and sophisticated details. The entrance alone defies salon conventions: an original Ligne Roset round sofa, newly upholstered in deep blackberry red, plays against a luminous turquoise textile floor. A carefully considered palette of brass, natural stone, velvet, and walnut envelops the space in warmth and sophistication. Flexible curry-yellow velvet curtains subtly define intimate "cabins" without fragmenting the open flow. Here, stylists can devote undivided attention to their clients. "It's about creating an experience," Kleine notes. "People happily spend three hours being thoroughly pampered." This attention to detail extends beyond the main floor—the basement facilities receive the same considered treatment, with coordinated wallpapers and refined finishes. A custom brass ornamental curtain between levels adds a subtle touch of luxury, amplified by Spanish Emperador Dark stone floors that ground the space. Specially designed round brass-framed mirror lights cast a warm, luminous glow throughout. Organically curved shelving, a leather-clad bar counter, and vintage 1960s accessories—including striking golden crane sculptures—complete this coherent and inviting vision.
