Elegant Maisonette in a Historic Building
A historic residence in Cologne's old town has been thoughtfully restored.
The narrow Salzgasse winds through the heart of Cologne's historic old town, connecting Heumarkt directly to the Rhine's banks. Here, a multi-story listed corner building required renovation, with its attic reimagined as a generous maisonette apartment. Wendling Architektur, a Cologne-based practice, was tasked with orchestrating a sensitive modernization that honors the building's protected character while enabling contemporary living.
Originally built in the 19th century, the structure was reconstructed as residential housing during the old town's renewal around 1935. Its roof, largely destroyed in World War II, was painstakingly restored in the 1950s—though the attic had been converted to office space. The renovation strategy called for merging the existing office and upper loft into one generous residential suite. The confined nature of the alleyway presented immediate construction challenges, but navigating approvals proved equally complex: the previously unauthorized loft required formal approval, non-compliant elements had to be removed, and heightened fire safety standards further complicated residential certification. Beyond structural logistics, the façade underwent complete energetic renovation. Monument protection standards were met through high-performance aerogel-based insulating plaster, while new wooden windows—crafted with traditional glazing bars—were installed and the original façade color meticulously restored. The roof received period-appropriate slate shingles in traditional German style, while newly integrated dormers were finished in zinc, creating a harmonious addition that optimizes natural light and ventilation in the new living spaces. Beyond the maisonette, five additional units received comprehensive energy modernization. Each apartment was outfitted with radiant floor heating and premium oak parquetry. Large-format porcelain stoneware tiles in kitchens and bathrooms underscore the refined character of the entire restoration.
