An Extraordinary Vision

Within the historic cocoa warehouse of Speicherstadt, a pâtisserie with refined industrial character emerged

Pâtisserie Johanna came to life in an extraordinary location—nestled within the historic Speicherstadt district, in a converted cocoa warehouse with sweeping views of the modern HafenCity. The transformation masterfully honors the site's heritage status while bridging contemporary design with its industrial past. Every detail of the renovation and interior design respects the building's protected status, breathing new meaning into this iconic warehouse structure.

On the ground floor of this UNESCO World Heritage site—which previously hosted a bustling market hall with food vendors—owners Inka and Ralph Orth realized a deeply personal vision in honor of their daughter, Johanna, a gifted pastry chef who tragically lost her life in the Ahr Valley floods. The interior design philosophy centers on a singular concept: to showcase the artisanal creations as precious jewels, each displayed with deliberate elegance. Black and gold form the beating heart of the aesthetic, echoing in the logo itself—a delicate, gold-leafed butterfly set against a dark ground. Visitors are immediately welcomed by a luminous installation: a swarm of golden butterflies suspended at the entrance. This enchanting motif reverberates throughout the space in multiple expressions—LED wall installations, illuminated signage, embossed glassware, and varied material applications. The confections rest in museum-quality display vitrines, subtly yet strategically lit like precious artifacts in a fine jewelry salon. Custom glass partitions and folding glass wall systems with solid wood frames maximize transparency without compromising the sanctuary-like atmosphere. Sleek black leather seating lines the perimeter, while powder-coated steel shelving in the service bar gleams in gold finish. Matte black HiMacs work surfaces, a Versailles wood-grain vinyl floor, and seating with gold and bronze-toned cushioning, paired with black-surface tables, achieve a refined industrial elegance throughout.
