You never get a second chance to make a first impression—a truth that applies just as much to architecture as it does to people. This is precisely why the entrance area of a building deserves special attention. With this vision in mind, Deutsche Post launched a design competition seeking a concept to transform the DHL Post Tower's reception area in Bonn into a striking space that harmonizes seamlessly with the building's architectural language. The winning entry came from designfunktion Rheinland, a specialist in interior design. "We wanted our new foyer to embody DPDHL's dynamic growth, innovation, and customer focus," explains Dietmar Büdenbender, Executive Vice President Corporate Real Estate at DPDHL. "designfunktion understood our vision perfectly and delivered not just an exceptional concept, but also executed it flawlessly despite our extremely tight timeline."

The redesigned hall's crowning feature is the reception counter, crowned by conically arranged pendant lights handcrafted by the renowned lighting manufacturer Sattler Lighting. "Since the reception hall centers on the visitor experience and well-being, our lighting specialists recommended a Human Centric Lighting (HCL) approach," notes Peter Hannig, managing director of designfunktion Rheinland. This system intelligently supplements natural daylight with artificial light tuned to the perfect brightness and color temperature. The daylight-responsive controls cut energy consumption by up to 35 percent. Beyond aesthetics and efficiency, functionality was paramount. The counter rests on a platform equipped with integrated underfloor heating and cooling, while protective glass panels shield staff from drafts. The lounge area features a striking green zero—a bold statement of the company's environmental commitment. Crafted by Green Office from real moss and Iceland moss in the company's signature color, this living wall also enhances indoor air quality and acoustics. The café bar seating reflects the same marriage of comfort and practicality. Wave-patterned COR Affair seating pieces are fully mobile, connected by magnets, and endlessly reconfigurable. Yellow backrests echo the company's iconic brand heritage. Even Dagmar Hünten, a long-time reception staff member, enthusiastically endorses the transformation. "It's far more welcoming for our guests," she says. "And the new heated desks make a tremendous difference, especially in winter."
