Flexibility as the Guiding Principle
New Mitte Location: Dynamic Workspaces
Piabo, a communications agency, needed a new working environment that would keep pace with rapid industry changes. The solution: a dynamic spatial concept developed by office design specialists designfunktion in partnership with Vitra. The secret to success? Involving employees from the start. Recent research from Fraunhofer IAO shows that staff engagement and management commitment are crucial for transforming a workplace. So Piabo's 45 employees were consulted through online surveys and workshops about their work habits and space needs. The result shaped every aspect of the office—from layout and design to color and materials—with flexibility woven throughout as a defining principle.
The outcome is an adaptable 600 m² workspace designed for creative collaboration. A dynamic multi-space environment offers a versatile mix: quiet zones for focused work, meeting areas for teamwork, and everything in between. A smart modular system uses layered acoustic curtains to divide open spaces as needed. Two sizes of office pods—one for individuals, one for small teams of 2–4—provide undisturbed retreat spaces ideal for calls and concentrated work. The larger pods excel for brainstorming and client meetings. A relaxation room, creative spaces, and meeting areas complete the picture, giving employees the flexibility to shift between connection and focus. Welcoming clients and partners is seamless, without disruption to daily workflow.
Spaces expand and transform on demand. The meeting room becomes a generous event venue anchored by a tiered platform—instantly ideal for presentations and gatherings. That same platform works as a staircase with seating, creating informal gathering spots throughout the day. Every piece of furniture adapts too: height-adjustable desks and ergonomic chairs support agile working styles. Wilkhahn's folding conference table is ingenious—it folds flat and rolls away when not in use, maximizing space efficiency. Acoustic curtains and strategically placed carpets control sound. Vitra's high-sided sofas pull double duty: they're acoustic elements that also carve out cozy, private niches within the open workspace—sanctuaries of comfort in the heart of the action.
