Harmoniously designed

New primary school presents itself as a building ensemble with high identification value

New Primary School with Gymnasium in Ammerbuch-Altingen – North Elevation, Main Entrance

For the new two-stream primary school with sports hall, the municipality of Ammerbuch wanted a high-quality, economical and sustainable building complex that would respond appropriately to urban planning and functional requirements. The existing community school building on the site made way for the new building, and the remaining area will be developed as a residential area in the future.

The architectural firm dasch zürn + partner developed a concept that combines the school, sports hall and open spaces into a harmonious overall complex that blends into the hillside location. The school and sports hall shield the residential buildings from the busy school playground. Seating steps that can be used as a forum connect the slightly sunken playground in the southern part of the property with the adjacent grounds. The uniform choice of materials for the closed exterior wall surfaces, with fired clinker as rear-ventilated cladding, reinforces the sculptural form of the building. A forecourt with bicycle parking spaces provides access to the school and sports hall, whose entrance halls are connected to each other inside. The open connection between the two floors, characterised by exposed concrete and silver fir surfaces, makes orientation easy. The general teaching area with classrooms and course rooms, as well as the art room and the teachers' area, are located on the upper floor. The all-day area, the multi-purpose room and general rooms are located on the ground floor around the central access area. In the school building, sanitary cores and stairwells reinforce the solid construction with load-bearing wall panels and supports, while in the sports hall it is the changing room and equipment room wings and the gable walls. The triple-glazed windows have external sun protection that darkens the rooms or serves as glare protection as required. Installations, built-in appliances and technology for sound absorption and control are integrated into the suspended ceilings. The roof surface with sloped insulation and extensive greening is used for rainwater buffering. Heat is generated by a full heat contracting system from Stadtwerke Tübingen in the school's boiler room. For this purpose, Stadtwerke installed a gas-powered CHP unit and a gas condensing boiler to cover peak loads. The building is heated via underfloor or sports floor heating. Hot water for the changing area of the gym is supplied by a heating buffer storage tank, which is supplied with heat by the municipal utilities. A directly connected fresh water station provides hot water on a continuous flow basis. Electric instantaneous water heaters supply the less frequently used taps. A total of 169 photovoltaic modules supply the school campus with electricity. In addition to natural ventilation via the windows, a mechanical ventilation system with a high heat recovery rate has been installed.
