Southern Charm
A Mediterranean garden that evokes vacation vibes and delights local pollinators
On a sunny day with brilliant blue skies and warm temperatures, this garden instantly transports you to the Mediterranean. That unmistakable flair radiates from every corner of this private home's outdoor space. The masterminds behind this stunning redesign? The team at Dahmen Garten- und Landschaftsbau in Neuss, brought in by the homeowners to transform their backyard into something truly special.
Beyond capturing that Mediterranean atmosphere, the family wanted a generous terrace—one spacious enough for gatherings and shared meals. From this vantage point, the sunken garden (set two meters below street level) becomes a focal point worth savoring. Getting materials to the site proved tricky: access was limited to a narrow passage alongside the house. Yet the team persevered, incorporating locally-sourced Grauwacke stone from a nearby quarry to create a cohesive, harmonious design. Flowering perennials and shrubs frame the lawn and create a natural transition from terrace to garden. What delights the eye also serves a greater purpose—it's a haven for pollinators and beneficial insects. "This garden showcases how functionality and beauty can work together seamlessly," notes Björn Dahmen.
