An Atmosphere of Trust

Custom-designed office space for a law firm in Essen.

To support the dynamic growth of this 75-year-old law firm, Schmidt, von der Osten & Huber (SOH) relocated from their longtime Haumannplatz office to expansive new premises near the Folkwang Museum. The office combine shepherded the project from concept through design, planning, tender, and completion—creating a distinctive new workspace that reflects SOH's identity and values for its 100 employees. The process began with intensive collaboration between combine and SOH's leadership, featuring workshops and discussions that explored multiple design directions before final concepts emerged.

Across five floors and approximately 2,500 m², the design encompasses individual offices, shared workspaces, and meeting rooms, alongside a generous staff lounge, reception and waiting area, and a dedicated client zone with flexible meeting spaces. Every detail reflects SOH's core values—security, trust, respect, and partnership—expressed through understated, refined interiors that create the ideal backdrop for lawyer-client collaboration. Soft, neutral base tones and predominantly light finishes establish a welcoming, energizing atmosphere from the moment visitors enter. The entrance sets the tone: Kehlheim limestone surfaces complement warm wood slats, strategically positioned leather seating, contemporary furnishings, and carefully curated plantings at the reception desk. Linear lighting enhances the fresh aesthetic while subtle pendant fixtures define key zones. Warm brown anchors the palette throughout, appearing as flooring in the client area, treads on the gracefully spiraling staircase, and across the expansive staff lounge. The year-long renovation incorporated sustainable design principles—a commitment that pleased landlord Buteo. Beyond the biophilic elements supporting indoor air quality, a rooftop photovoltaic system powers the modern workspace.
