Future-Ready Healthcare Building in Sustainable Timber Hybrid Construction

This new dental care facility showcases impressive innovation in both design and execution. Completed in just 15 months across 3,100 m² of usable space, the project by Thieken Architekten + Ingenieure from Dorsten demonstrates how sustainable timber hybrid construction and architectural excellence can seamlessly come together in a state-of-the-art healthcare building.

The structure relies on load-bearing reinforced concrete columns, precast concrete elements, and a stiffening core system for its structural integrity. The upper floors feature 1,920 m² of prestressed concrete hollow core slabs—a choice that not only accelerated construction but also eliminated approximately 550 m³ of concrete compared to traditional in-situ casting. The staggered upper level and entire façade employ ecological timber frame construction, with 3,132 m² of prefabricated timber stud walls delivered complete with pre-installed windows. Interior partition walls follow the same timber stud system throughout. The ceilings were strategically designed with integrated beams, allowing building services and mechanical components to be thoughtfully incorporated without compromising the clean lines above.

The spatial layout thoughtfully separates patient and staff flows. Sunlit corridors along the outer walls guide patients intuitively through the building while keeping distances short. Staff corridors are designed so circulation paths never intersect—ensuring smooth operations. Interior spaces feel bright and welcoming, fostering a sense of calm and well-being. The design philosophy balances form and function beautifully; specially crafted areas for children create a relaxed, reassuring environment. The program is rounded out by a generous south-facing roof terrace with lounge seating, an integrated physiotherapy suite, and a modern basement car park.

Prefabrication at this scale demands exceptional planning precision—a challenge the team met through rigorous 3D digital modeling. Every specialist planner fed their respective trades into a single coordinated model, catching potential conflicts early and enabling transparent, efficient coordination with the client. The parallel work of 24 trades across different construction phases was orchestrated with remarkable precision. The result exemplifies a powerful convergence: digital planning, sustainable construction methods, and user-centered design. It's a healthcare building that is both functionally efficient and atmospherically rich—a testament to architectural discipline and vision.
