Mainz's Most Prestigious Gymnasium Undergoes Complete Renovation and Expansion

More than 30 years after the Theresianium first opened its doors, this prestigious Mainz gymnasium was ready for a comprehensive overhaul. Christl + Bruchhäuser Freie Architekten undertook a complete renovation of the distinctive oval structure in just under four years, addressing fire safety compliance, environmental remediation, accessibility requirements, energy efficiency, and structural deficiencies. An additional split-level floor was added to accommodate the growing spatial needs of this renowned all-day institution.

The architects deliberately preserved the building's striking identity—its bold exposed concrete aesthetic, two expansive interior halls, and visible ventilation systems running throughout. Only the new upper storey's façade and fenestration (steel and aluminium construction) reads as a distinct, contemporary addition. Inside, however, the designers orchestrated a fundamental reimagining. Beyond the critical fire protection upgrades, the spatial programme was entirely rethought to align with the school's progressive pedagogical vision, inspired by the Bonn Montagsstiftung approach to self-directed learning. Each half-floor now houses year groups 5–10 in dedicated clusters, replacing the rigid compartments of the original design. These clusters feature flowing, inspiring learning landscapes with flexible zones throughout the upper hall. Contemporary learning furniture and glass partitions now define the teaching spaces, fostering an open-door philosophy. State-of-the-art LED lighting transforms what were once dark, confined corridors and halls into bright, welcoming environments.

The teaching spaces were necessarily reduced to accommodate updated safety standards, new escape routes, proper ceiling heights, and enhanced natural lighting. The administrative offices were consequently relocated to the neighbouring former boarding facility. Combined with the expansion storey strategically planned from the outset, the facility now comfortably serves 950 students and 120 staff across this four-stream, full-day G8 gymnasium.
