Lakeside living at its most charming

Thoughtful design creates exceptional quality of life in one of the region's most coveted residential neighborhoods

Essen's southern district is one of the city's most sought-after residential areas. Finding a home with views across Lake Baldeney is genuinely special. Architects Brüning Rein rose to the challenge, designing a striking lakeside residence on an exposed plot that honors both the water views and the area's industrial heritage—reinterpreted for contemporary living. Generous window walls frame the landscape, while subtle nods to the surrounding workers' settlements give the home its distinctive character.

The two-story residence sits adjacent to a protected historic mining settlement, drawing visual language from the industrial past and vernacular architecture that once defined the neighborhood. Red hand-struck bricks animate the façade, while anthracite-finished metal accents frame the flat roof, garage, and window openings, creating a sophisticated edge. Inside, warm larch frames the windows, harmonizing with light oak flooring and playing against exposed concrete surfaces and white plaster—a composition that feels both contemporary and inviting. The expansive living and dining area flows seamlessly with an open kitchen, while custom joinery pieces in wardrobes and bathroom fixtures integrate effortlessly into the space. A sculptural staircase in dark steel and timber serves as a striking room divider, connecting to the upper level with guest quarters and a gallery overlooking the main living room. The ground floor remains the home's true heart, where everyday living unfolds on a single level, with the living areas and private spaces thoughtfully positioned. Strategically placed windows and skylights orchestrate light and views throughout, while the generous terrace—partially covered and paved in sleek Gabano Silco—extends the home into the outdoors. The landscape design, conceived as an integral part of the architectural vision, winds down the steep southern slope via a serpentine path to the meadows below. Layered seating areas and planting reinforce the spatial rhythm established indoors. From the garden, looking back toward the house, you'll find yourself longing to experience that exclusive vista from the recessed loggia above.
