Blue Room in the Blue Land

The extension to the Franz Marc Museum impresses with its extraordinary architecture

Blue Room in the Blue Land

More space for the Franz Marc Museum: at the end of 2023/2024, g41 Architekten from Munich completed an extension to the rear park area of the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See. The new multifunctional Blau Raum - "our turquoise-blue & mountain-black wooden box", as architect Wolfgang Kortüm likes to affectionately call it - was created in the midst of the wonderful mountain panorama and the dignified stone museum building within sight. But the building is of course much more than that: it is a symbol of the artistic vision and spirit of Franz Marc, one of the most important representatives of Expressionism and co-founder of the artists' group "Der Blaue Reiter".

It was therefore clear that the "blue" theme should also radiate outwards: A façade structure made of carbonized timber cladding and recessed turquoise-blue patinated copper cladding protects the solid wood structure on a light-coloured stone base. Depending on the incidence of light, the museum building shimmers in velvety black or anthracite with bluish nuances. The architecture creates a flowing transition between inside and outside, light and shadow, art and nature - mountain black and turquoise blue. The new building for the expansion of the storage and depot facilities as well as for the museum's educational work offers a studio and multi-purpose area with a terrace and loggia in front, whereby the terrace area can be covered with a movable, robust sun canopy if required. The lower level houses an art depot, the restoration workshop as well as storage and archive rooms. Inside, wooden surfaces made of softwood and oak, exposed screed, dark natural stone flooring, anthracite-colored steel components and turquoise-blue tiles in the sanitary facilities create a warm, cozy atmosphere. By taking advantage of the hillside location, direct delivery for the depot and warehouse as well as barrier-free access and use were made possible. The new building offers a wide range of possibilities for events: Weddings and children's birthday parties can be celebrated or conferences held in the multifunctional Blau Raum studio room. Above all, however, it offers more space for the museum's educational programs and makes it possible to welcome larger groups and school classes.
