Plenty of room for security
Views and plenty of light from all sides characterize a family home
For many people, the longing for space culminates in the desire to own their own home. Spacious living areas in which all rooms are seamlessly connected suggest the fulfillment of this desire. A family in Hürth added another task to their list for the Pidoll architectural office. In addition to spaciousness, the new house also needed to provide a sense of security. Originally, this was the core need that the private space had to fulfill as a protected retreat.
Lined on two sides by quiet residential streets, the property offers many possibilities due to its size alone. Views of the neighborhood and nature are provided by large windows that open to different sides. The rather closed entrance façade meets the need for privacy, but already hints at the internal spatial structure with a centrally positioned window joint. On the garden side, the joint widens with a wide window. It is slightly recessed, just as the recessed windows characterize the façade and sometimes create surprising open spaces. For example, in front of the parents' area on the upper floor or through the loggia in front of the kitchen. Here, family life extends outside in an almost Mediterranean way, especially in summer. Parents and children share the upper floor, but are spatially and visually separated by the aforementioned glass joint. In any case, life together takes place on the first floor, where a large open-plan living, cooking and dining area offers space for everyone and all activities. The staircase with the wall behind it has a structuring effect. It divides, points the way, directs the view, which repeatedly falls into the lush natural surroundings of the house. The choice of materials succeeds in combining this spaciousness with the desire for a sense of security. Oak planks create a warm atmosphere in the bright rooms. The exciting daylight situations are complemented by a sophisticated lighting concept. It adapts the large room on the first floor to its use and creates different islands of light. At the same time, the room becomes wide and yet envelops each family member in a pleasant environment of light and security according to their mood.
