Light and Grounded
Renovation and Modernization of a 1910 Semi-Detached Home
The semi-detached home, originally built in 1910, required reconstruction in the 1950s. Now fully modernized to meet today's standards, it was handed over to its owners in July 2019. Across three stories, the 200 m² of living space reflects the clients' vision for andOffice: generous room proportions, ample storage, a seamless transition from the ground floor to the garden, and an open roof truss created by removing the attic floor.
On the ground floor, the entrance and stairwell gained new dimension through a strategic shift of the kitchen wall, creating breathing room. With custom cabinetry and a built-in bench, this once modest foyer has transformed into an inviting entrance. Generous storage solutions tuck away the everyday essentials—coats, shoes, vacuum—while a guest WC serves the south-facing entry. The living area, separated by a sliding door from the entrance, features an expansive east-facing window seat. An open floor plan connects the living space to a kitchen with freestanding island and dining area, flowing seamlessly outward. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on both the garden and street sides amplify this sense of openness and light, while enlarged windows flood the interiors with natural daylight.
White-oiled oak parquet flooring, echoing up through the stairwell, guides you to the upper level with its generous master bedroom and dressing room, two children's bedrooms, and a family bath. Here too, floor-to-ceiling windows dissolve the boundary between interior and garden.
In the attic, the removal of the intermediate ceiling reveals the soaring open roof truss. White walls and supporting columns emphasize the space's generous proportions, grounded by warm oak underfoot. A flexible guest room doubles as a home office, while an ensuite shower room completes this versatile top-floor retreat.
