Alpe-Adria Calling
A striking new restaurant in Schwabing featuring a bold culinary concept and refreshingly elegant design
Oversized marble slabs in crisp black and white anchor the dining space, playing backdrop to sculptural wooden seating and tables trimmed in brass, alongside glass and brass designer lighting that whispers Art Deco influences. Portun at Schwabinger Tor is refined without pretense – and the details elevate the interior design to something truly extraordinary. Take the floor-to-ceiling glass wine cabinet anchoring the dining room, a treasure trove of rare bottles found nowhere else in Munich. Or the verdant ceiling hovering above the bar, dressed in refined wood slats, where bartender Filip Kadlec crafts inventive cocktails for eager guests – including his signature "Tiki Old Fashioned," a fruity-fresh riff on the Piña Colada, balanced with reduced coconut water and Plantation Pineapple Rum. The floor-to-ceiling glazing bathes the space in natural light by day, while an artfully layered lighting scheme – soft, indirect, and rich in tone – transforms the room into an enchanting evening retreat. The name Portun, Istrian for "gateway" or "passage," couldn't be more fitting for its location at Schwabinger Tor.
The culinary vision is equally compelling. Chefs Daniel Martinovic and Zarko Skocic channel the soul of the Alps-Adriatic region through their cooking. Drawing inspiration from the traditional cuisines of Croatia, Italy, and Austria, they craft authentic dishes that honor classical recipes while celebrating fresh, local ingredients. Martinovic, 34, honed his craft at Les Deux, a Michelin-starred Munich institution, previously cooked in Zagreb, and spent years at the presidential table in Croatia. Skocic, a native of Dalmatia, built his reputation over many years at Passauerhof in Grinzing while gaining international exposure in Japan and Hong Kong. Plates showcase pristine seafood – fish, squid, mussels, and crabs – sourced from the Dalmatian island of Pag, alongside Italian olive oil, Istrian sea salt and cheese, and Alpine beef. It's a love letter to the region's singular culinary heritage, with each dish carefully composed as a sensory experience, paired with carefully curated wines including Pinot Grigio from Slovenia. Co-owning Portun alongside entrepreneur Sasa Lukic is Marko Pešić, a former national basketball champion and current managing director of FC Bayern Basketball, who's called Schwabing home for over a decade.
