A well-designed oral surgery practice speaks to calm, expertise, and human warmth

Creating a welcoming environment is essential in dental practice design—it's about putting patients at ease before anxiety can take hold. The Schenk planning office in Karlsruhe designed an oral surgery practice in Bochum that embodies calm, expertise, and warmth in every detail. The project was realized by Vervoorts & Schindler Architects, also based in Bochum.

The Kortumhaus, distinguished by its striking natural stone façade, has been a protected landmark since 1996. Named after a historic department store, it stands as a model for thoughtful urban development—where heritage preservation and contemporary functionality work together seamlessly. Located prominently in the city center, this landmark now houses an oral surgery practice that occupies former office space. The space had been vacant and fell short of modern medical practice standards in layout, equipment, and infrastructure. A complete gut renovation was necessary to establish the functional and hygienic environment required for specialized dental surgery. This transformation enabled a thoughtfully redesigned floor plan, streamlined workflows, and state-of-the-art medical equipment. The architects prioritized accessibility, rigorous hygiene standards, and a serene, welcoming environment. The generous entrance hall with its reception desk sets an immediately reassuring tone for patients.

Beyond the entrance stands a striking wooden cube in warm tones—an architectural focal point that houses the technical systems, laboratory, imaging suite, and administrative spaces. Color accents are restrained; the atmosphere is intentionally calm and composed. Expanses of glass and natural light animate the spaces. Most floor surfaces feature high-quality PVC—durable, easy to maintain, and practical. Throughout, the finishes are refined; the patient waiting area, in particular, balances modernity with inviting warmth. The invisible challenge proved equally demanding for the Bochum architects: integrating the building's security infrastructure, cooling, and ventilation systems while meeting rigorous fire safety codes. Originally, this space functioned as the department store's mechanical systems hub—a constraint that required sophisticated problem-solving.
