Bathed in Light

A single-family home in Meerbusch that captivates with seamless visual connections throughout

Located in a quiet residential area, the spacious plot is a dream come true: with sufficient distance to neighbouring buildings, schrötgens architekten from Mönchengladbach had the opportunity to design the new building to face all three sunny sides and open it up with generous glass surfaces. The staggered structure rests centrally on the spacious garden plot and opens up with its large-format sliding glass doors onto a main terrace facing the extensive garden to the east and onto the pool to the south via the kitchen. The openings on all sides allow the view to flow unhindered through the rooms, with the interior and exterior merging harmoniously. The façade of the cubic building with its recessed staggered storey is characterised by light-coloured, slender and particularly long water-struck bricks.

The clinker brick contrasts with the large glass surfaces and creates a visual tension between heaviness and lightness. A small forecourt leads to the main entrance, which is spatially defined by a projection on the ground floor. The garage is set apart from the house by its filigree oak slats. The cream-coloured plastered upper floor protrudes, forming a canopy for the entrance area. The entrance to the house is on the main axis of view to the garden, making the open character of the building, which is connected to the outdoor space, visible at first glance. The floor plan reflects the desire of the family of four with a dog for an open home: from the kitchen island, the view can wander over the dining table into the living room. The adjoining study can also be opened up to the living room via a generous sliding door.

Above the dining area, a high air space extends to the upper floor, which is vertically illuminated by height-adjustable light rings. Not only does the colour scheme of the minimalist materials used radiate calm and elegant cosiness, but the acoustic plaster on the upper floor ceiling also creates a particularly pleasant atmosphere. On the ground floor, the warm oak tone of the fixtures and wall slats is contrasted by the exposed screed floor and complemented by light-coloured design elements such as the curtains. Indirect lighting with recurring LED strips and recessed spotlights accentuates the gas fireplace and custom-made built-in furniture. The result is a well-designed residential building full of light and life.
