Timeless and Sustainable

In Süderfeldpark, nature and architecture create a seamless dialogue

Süderfeldpark in Lokstedt represents a successful urban conversion project, developed as part of Hamburg's ambitious housing initiative. Situated north of the UKE, this 4.5-hectare site—originally a construction company's depot—was initially problematic for residential development due to contamination from construction waste and household debris. Comprehensive remediation, undertaken in close coordination with environmental authorities and the Eimsbüttel district, paved the way for transformation. The surrounding urban context, defined by early-20th-century villas and 1950s terraced housing along Lotte- and Süderfeldstraße, set the tone for the new neighbourhood's design. Carefully integrated at Eppendorf's border, Süderfeldpark respects Lokstedt's established character while introducing a contemporary vision: vibrant urban living immersed in nature.

The Süderfeld Park development brings together a 9,000 m² public park, 395 residences—from generous family homes to intimate one-room apartments—and a thoughtfully designed urban ecosystem. Tchoban Voss Architects designed three of the ten building plots, delivering approximately 123 apartments and 10,500 m² of living space with 125 underground parking spaces. The result is a truly green urban neighbourhood at Hamburg's heart. Generously proportioned open spaces, a preserved tree canopy, and individually crafted courtyards create an exceptionally liveable environment. Sustainability is woven throughout: all buildings meet the stringent KfW 55 standard, an efficient combined heat and power plant reduces energy consumption, and integrated car-sharing and e-mobility solutions foster a low-carbon lifestyle. Together, these elements establish Süderfeld Park's distinctive identity.

The integrated daycare facility reinforces the neighbourhood's family-oriented and intergenerational character. Every apartment reflects meticulous planning—intelligent floor layouts, premium finishes, floor-to-ceiling windows, and generous terraces and balconies create homes that truly work. A standout material choice is Wienerberger's specially commissioned thin-format water-struck brick, an exclusive custom production for this project. Its rich, nuanced palette of warm tones and subtle colour variations mirrors nature's complexity, visually anchoring the project's core vision: sophisticated urban living surrounded by green.
