Hammerbrook Reimagined
Completing the New Building Ensemble on Klosterwall
On one of Hamburg's last undeveloped downtown plots—nestled between the main railway station and the city's renowned art mile—Becken, a leading real estate and investment firm, recently completed and subsequently sold "ConneXion Office," a striking ten-storey office and commercial building. DGNB Gold and WiredScore Gold certified, the project represents the architectural vision of Störmer Murphy and Partners. At 17,000 m² of usable space, the building completes the dynamic new building ensemble at Klosterwall in Hammerbrook.
The roughly 1,000 workstations attract leading companies in renewable energy, who appreciate the thoughtfully designed, bespoke floor plans, integrated e-charging stations, and expansive communal roof terrace. The triangular footprint—dictated by the development plan—presented a distinctive challenge: how to maximize usable space while managing the building's considerable depth. The solution is elegant: a central atrium paired with strategically positioned internal circulation and supply routes flood office spaces with natural light. Facing the railway lines, the gently convex primary façade defines the edge of the block, while the side façades curve gracefully inward above the base, creating generous outdoor transitions to adjacent buildings and reinforcing the area's campus-like character. Ground-floor dining venues activate the surrounding streetscape, while distinctively profiled trapezoidal columns and encircling ceramic bands with glazed, textured surfaces articulate the building's distinctive aesthetic.
