Third Time's the Charm
Architectural Firm Completes Third Office Expansion Within Historic Courtyard Estate
Several years ago, as part of the renovation of Haus Radong—a historic square farmstead in Meerbusch dating to 1895—the architectural firm mo.studio created its own office and exhibition space. The team carefully restored the building's original character while thoughtfully reimagining the interior to support today's modern workplace. The result is a compelling dialogue between past and present, where heritage architecture meets contemporary design.
Now, following two successful expansions, a third transformation was underway at the protected estate. This time, the goal was clear: develop a new office wing dedicated to prestigious workspaces for the CEO, CFO, and accounting team. The firm identified a former warehouse adjacent to mo.office II as the ideal candidate for this conversion. The ground floor became a parking garage, while the upper level houses the new office space, accessible through the shared foyer entrance. Spanning two stories connected by generous open volumes, the design balances both private offices and collaborative work areas. "We wanted to create an open spatial experience while respecting the privacy each workspace requires," explains Managing Director Oliver Bloch. The centerpiece is a glass-walled meeting room positioned prominently in the floor plan—a deliberate choice to ensure visibility and flow throughout. Closed offices occupy the gable walls, linked on the upper level by a generous walkway that doubles as additional open workspace. In total, this third expansion spans 330 m² and follows the firm's established design language: a striking interplay of black and white.
The interior design and furnishings draw heavily from the firm's in-house manufacturing workshop, complemented by curated partnerships with brands like Vitra—featuring their All Black and Jean Prouvé collections—and premium lighting specialist Viabizzuno. Consistent with the two earlier expansions, this extension features seamless white Pandomo flooring with a cement base. Black oiled MDF panels and white plasterboard define the wall and ceiling surfaces. The result is cohesive: all three expansions appear as one unified vision, despite being realized over time.
