Harmonic unity
Successful extension of an existing house in Groß Flottbek
The existing house in Groß Flottbek had already been modernized around 15 years ago. Now it was to be extended and redesigned again - adapted to the needs of the owners. The client wanted Meyer Terhorst Architekten to create a new and spacious dining area on the first floor. However, in line with the requirements and ideas of the residents and inspired by the architects' ideas, more than just a new dining area was developed. By taking a holistic view of the task and incorporating the interior design, a very harmonious reorganization and design of the living spaces was created, so that there is no creative break between old and new.
The extension of the house to the east by means of a newly constructed cube creates a particularly attractive location for the dining area in the spatial structure, which showcases the views of the fantastic garden. Large sliding glass elements blur the boundary between inside and outside. The old apple tree with its seasonally changing views is thus framed in large format and serves as a perfect garden painting. The new fireplace with a surround made of natural stone and wood gives the room additional coziness. To improve the acoustics of the frequently used room, the architects recommended a soundproof ceiling from Lahnau Akustik, which ensures exceptionally good room acoustics.
The existing entrance area on the first floor was extended by an open checkroom with a comfortable seating niche as part of the construction work. The newly designed staircase made of solid wood was staged in the interior design with a suspended steel and glass combination as a dividing element. In this way, the sober circulation routes from the time the house was built were broken up and transformed into homely spaces. The oak parquet flooring in a herringbone pattern conveys warmth and durability. An important part of the redesign and extension is the harmonious lighting concept throughout. Different light sources give the various living areas their own atmosphere. For the new old house, the architects created a spacious, timelessly modern unit by combining custom-made built-in furniture and a continuous color concept of earthy and natural tones.
