Temple of contemplation

Lots of glass and high ceilings turn the light-flooded rooms of a fitness studio into a place of peace and contemplation

A fitness studio with a difference: this beautiful project clearly focuses on beauty. The almost completely glazed sports pavilion for a family from Mönchengaldbach looks almost like a Zen temple and attracts attention - especially at night - with its three-metre cantilevered roof overhang and the linear water basin in front of it. Lots of glass and very high ceilings make the light-flooded rooms a place of peace and contemplation - and are just as suitable for relaxing as they are for workouts and parties.

The private fitness palace was completed in 2022 after around one and a half years of planning and construction - it was placed on an existing underground parking garage next to the detached house. To connect the old building with the new one, an access route to the Sportsdome was created, which is particularly impressive thanks to its lighting: cube-like luminaires point the way - their design is more reminiscent of sculptures where the light streams through a slit-shaped opening. In addition, the path is illuminated by them both glare-free and focused, creating chiaroscuro sequences that make the corridor appear even larger and wider. Speaking of light - this also plays an important role in the design of the new building: in the canopy, recessed ceiling spotlights with a narrow focus and strong glare control create a circular lighting effect on the light-colored natural stone tiles around the pavilion. The large, floor-to-ceiling Skyframe windows and the generous ceiling height make the rooms bright and inviting during the day. However, a certain wow effect was also required in the evening. In order to be equipped for events on the one hand and sporting activities on the other, several lighting systems are now used: the decisive light is provided by recessed spotlights that illuminate the entire floor area with 1,000 lux. The daylight-dependent area is illuminated by the shadow gaps along the windows and a light cove in the middle of the hall and can be color-controlled to produce either cool or warm white light. The large, internally gold-plated pendant luminaires also provide the main central lighting and simultaneously emit a changing mood light - for both sporty and non-sporty everyday life. Probably the most exciting part and centerpiece of the new Sportsdome are the staircase and the kitchen block. To make this spacious area stand out even more, 65 individual golden pendants were added to connect the mirrored kitchen block with the staircase. By arranging the pendants at different heights, the arrangement looks like a wave and is not an obstacle due to the great room height of four and a half meters
