Cast Off for a Different Life

The pandemic brought us home offices, New Work was already on the horizon, and now perhaps New Living is on the way?

Why not apply the newfound flexibility of work to your living and lifestyle situation? Exactly—there's really no reason not to. And there are certainly plenty of compelling ideas out there. Take this example: home offices and the ability to work 100 percent remotely have made life more flexible. Including the choice of where to live. Living in Paris while working for an office in Cologne? No problem at all. Joining Frankfurt meetings with a view of the Mediterranean? Why not. The idea of abandoning a fixed residence altogether, traveling the world, and working remotely in the process no longer seems far-fetched. Much that seemed unimaginable just a short time ago now appears possible—especially considering the compelling solutions now available to make this wanderlust dream a reality. One such solution comes from the Netherlands, specifically from the company Cruising Home, whose houseboats unite travel, living, and working under one roof. With a touch of luxury, if you wish.

Cruising Home's Traveller Class, for instance, is a residential, office, and travel vessel with the look and feel of a floating penthouse. Behind the 100 percent recyclable shipbuilding steel and the expansive mirrored glass surfaces that provide privacy at every harbor lies a genuine spatial marvel. Especially since it features full basement infrastructure and offers a generous two-level living area with ample storage. While the upper level—or rather, the water surface level—houses the living room, bedroom, bathroom, and dining area, the lower level accommodates a 25 m² cabin with two large panoramic windows, accessible from the living space via a staircase. This space is ideally suited as a reading room, lounge, or children's room. Double glazing, parquet flooring with radiant heating, a spacious built-in kitchen, and a fully equipped bathroom ensure comfort throughout the vessel. All interior construction is solid, leaving room for your own furniture choices.

Mobile offices are also available, which can operate with tax incentives. The 15-meter Traveller Class provides space for up to ten workstations—equipped with smartphones, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and professional event technology. To ensure secure docking at every harbor, the vessel can be outfitted with specialized systems such as the DockSense Control System, which functions like a parking assist for cars. Whether inland waterways, rivers, or coastal regions—these residential and office vessels are suited for various deployment areas, with the distinctive hull design featuring a V-bow and wave tunnel enabling safe and comfortable travel.
