Dortmund fitness lounge reimagined as a sanctuary for sport and relaxation

The Dortmund gym has been a dynamic hub since members began using it for training and recovery. The fitness lounge expansion itself was a feat of efficiency—the Bochum-based Kitzig Interior Design team completed a comprehensive renovation in just four weeks of planning and two weeks of build-out, working round-the-clock to meet the ambitious timeline.

Housed in a purpose-built industrial structure, the 2,640 m² facility spans two levels with an existing framework that Kitzig Interior Design thoughtfully reconfigured. The redesign streamlines workflows while enhancing the user experience. The ground floor features strength and cardio stations, yoga studios, and an outdoor pool. A grand staircase connects to an upper-level gallery—a vantage point offering sweeping views across the entire gym. The upper floor combines additional training stations with a dedicated spa and wellness zone, plus studios for the facility's comprehensive class offerings. "For our members, this gym is more than just a place to train—it's a second living room," says Viki Kitzig. "We invested deeply in comfortable gathering spaces that complement both fitness and wellness." The architect is particularly pleased with the bar area's design and dramatic lighting effects, anchored by an 85-inch media display. Each zone received its own carefully curated identity. The Power Plate area, for instance, boasts premium flooring engineered for superior grip and shock absorption across diverse workout styles. The color palette—bold black and white contrast—sharpens visual focus and enhances mental concentration during training. Multifaceted graphic wallpapers enliven the training zones and lounge seating, while rich accent colors and textured materials introduce contemporary character. The new spa and wellness area embraces natural materials throughout. Dark wood tones warm the atmosphere, while layered lighting design encourages deep relaxation.
