A Place Where Design Meets Community

The Forum at Deutz Cathedral creates vibrant public spaces—inside and out

Modern cities pulse with diversity and energy—yet they also grapple with inequality and social fragmentation. The positive and negative coexist, woven into the fabric of urban life. This tension defines the Forum at Deutz Cathedral, designed by Kastner Pichler Architects for the Catholic parish of St. Heribert. The new church and parish center anchors Deutzer Freiheit while actively shaping it. More than a religious space, it's a gathering place for all—regardless of age, background, or faith—where community is nurtured through shared experience.

Respecting the landmark status of the original church, the new parish center maintains careful distance from St. Heribert while standing confidently on Deutzer Freiheit. Its exposed concrete facade echoes the church's materiality, while aligned cornice heights anchor it within the existing ensemble. Between the church and the new building, a sheltered urban square emerges for the first time—intimate yet open to the street. This plaza flows naturally into the church garden, now publicly accessible, creating endless possibilities: outdoor extensions of the parish hall, festivals, exhibitions, community gatherings. Transparent glazing makes the forum inviting from every angle. Inside, a soaring entrance foyer—with its multi-story atrium and overlooking gallery—draws the eye through to the garden beyond. A sculptural staircase winds through three floors and the basement, connecting a flexible mix of seminar rooms, event spaces, a youth terrace, and the "book chapel"—a public reading room oriented toward Deutzer Freiheit.
