Where Inside Meets Outside

The "R 17" impresses with its horseshoe architecture and flood of natural light throughout.

What a luminous vision! The "R17" house in Munich, designed by architect Michael Bründl's firm in Ottenhofen, stands out from the moment you see its floor plan: a horseshoe-shaped structure that encloses a protected courtyard—transformed by an elegant covered terrace with integrated sun protection into a year-round retreat. Expansive fixed glazing and folding glass walls blur the boundary between inside and out, flooding the living spaces with natural light. A swimming pool completes this outdoor sanctuary, where the family has found their favorite place to spend time.

Windows and doors from Weiß & Weiß, a Munich-area firm, are central to the design strategy. They brought a sophisticated palette of matte black finishes—currently at the height of architectural fashion—to both interior and exterior spaces. Every detail was carefully orchestrated: the glazing bars across multiple window systems and the two sidelights of the entry door align with precision. The latticed windows evoke the openness of contemporary lofts while reinforcing the owner's distinctive aesthetic. The material choice—wood-aluminum hybrid—reflects a deliberately restrained, angular vocabulary that complements the modern geometry of the "R17." This hybrid approach marries the warmth and tactile quality of wood inside with weather-resistant aluminum cladding outside. Beyond energy efficiency and durability, hybrid windows offer considerable design flexibility. The exterior aluminum can be powder-coated in virtually any color. Slim, refined frames maximize daylight without compromising structural integrity or thermal performance. The window system is completed by integrated sun-control solutions perfectly calibrated to the windows and façade—and seamlessly connected to the smart home ecosystem.

Inside, the "R17" captivates with its open-plan spatial design, offering both flexibility and personal expression. The interior design by Sandra Humbert and her Pure Homing studio in Baldham was developed in close collaboration with the homeowner. The result is a holistic spatial concept distinguished by thoughtful material selection, refined clarity, and meticulous attention to detail. Most striking is the generous entry hall, anchored by a sculptural staircase with custom-designed lighting that sets the tone for the entire home.
