House and garden as one unified design

Maximum impact through minimal means

Life's demands evolve. A couple discovered this when their children moved out, signalling the beginning of a new chapter. They wanted this transformation reflected in their surroundings—a fresh home designed entirely for their renewed life together. Equally important was creating space for visiting family and friends. Münster-based Hilger Architects came recommended by former clients, and in close collaboration with the couple, designed a single-family residence in a contemporary residential development.

The vision: understated elegance paired with enhanced interior comfort—a philosophy that shaped every detail of the home, including its garden design. Hillger Architects integrated both seamlessly, mirroring the building's geometric clarity and refined colour palette in the outdoor spaces. The two-storey residence embraces the gabled roof characteristic of the region, its blocky form assertively defined by a dramatic two-storey entrance recess. The clinker brick façade employs subtle yellow-beige and grey tones, drawing inspiration from the naturally excavated Baumberger sandstone of the surrounding landscape. "The key to material authenticity," notes Jörg Hilger, "is disciplined restraint—choosing just a few, exceptional materials." The exterior balances nuanced clinker with grey-framed windows and anthracite roof tiles, while the entrance door commands attention through a warm honey-coloured lacquer finish with wood texture.

Interior refinement follows the same measured approach. Large-format beige tiles anchor the entrance, extending into bathrooms across floors and walls. Throughout the ground and upper levels, including stairs, white oak floorboards establish continuity. The palette progresses thoughtfully: warm, muted rose with grey undertones, delicate powdery pink—accented by a soft beige-grey-white that echoes the feel of gentle mist rising to the ceiling. All colours were expertly applied to meticulously prepared surfaces. Custom-designed cabinetry—predominantly white and floating—lines hallways, bathrooms, and the dressing room, with oak shelving surfaces coordinating with the flooring. The open-plan kitchen flows into dining and living areas, perfect for entertaining. Upstairs, private zones gather: bedrooms, dressing suite, and a wellness area with sauna. Technical sophistication complements aesthetic restraint: a high-performance heat pump with geothermal exchange and intelligent KNX home automation throughout.

The garden mirrors the home's geometric discipline and functional intent. Two terraces—a morning terrace before the living room and a raised evening terrace oriented toward the village church—frame the experience of outdoor living. Surrounding the lawn are planted and gravel zones providing layered definition. Native perennials thrive here: pink and white hydrangeas, purple allium, white sage arranged in linear beds with espalier sweetgum trees that can be uplighted. A drilled well supplies irrigation for all outdoor areas, completing the seamless integration of landscape and residence.
