When Goldschmiede Stöckl passed to a new generation, it relocated to larger, contemporary spaces within the same historic building in Mainz's old town—just steps away from its former storefront, now repurposed as a workshop. The owners at Heidacker Architekten envisioned something more: a setting that would showcase their craft in a modern light while creating an environment where both customers and artisans feel genuinely welcome. For a goldsmith, every piece tells a story—one connected to cherished moments and lasting memories. The challenge was clear: in a protected historic district, they would need to balance modern retail design and rigorous security requirements (including bulletproof glass) with strict heritage conservation rules. Even the entrance door remained untouched, and a listed Madonna sculpture was carefully integrated into the facade.

The architects collaborated with interior designer Ludwig Gützkow and lighting specialist Henn Planungswerkstatt—light being central to the entire concept. Now, the owner can adjust the lighting via app to ensure every piece of jewellery is showcased perfectly. By removing two internal walls, the architects created an open, transparent flow that makes the space feel even more generous. Two exposed steel beams and structural supports extending to the historic vaulted cellars below maintain stability. Within this unified space, distinct zones emerge: the entrance serves as the main area, anchored by a Corten steel counter and cash register. Along the entire facade runs a low parapet cabinet perfect for displaying glass vitrines. A standing-height consultation table grows naturally from one end of this cabinet. Behind the counter, a tactile concrete wall—subtly embossed with the company logo—provides a backdrop for more glass displays and a modular light installation of interchangeable illuminated boxes. At the rear, a more intimate consultation space offers a special moment: a glass partition opens to the workshop, inviting customers to witness the goldsmiths at work, watching their craft come to life.
