The art cube carries forward the story of its origins with enduring purpose
The art cube by Heidacker Architects in Bischofsheim reveals how something extraordinary can emerge from something ordinary. For this project, recycling and sustainability weren't just ideals—they were the driving force. Sustainable material reuse sparked the entire concept. What emerged is a place that honors its own history. The story actually began in 2017, well before the architects could have anticipated it: a deteriorating supermarket slated for demolition to make room for residential apartments. While awaiting the building permit, ten artists transformed the space with two exhibitions titled Super-M-Art. And there's more: cultural award winner Manuel Gerullis painted the supermarket's exterior walls with striking graffiti as part of this transformation.
When the exhibitions ended, locals rallied to preserve those vibrant graffiti walls. The challenge became clear: how could the eight large panels be carefully dismantled and given new purpose? With a small site, sponsors, and community support secured, the architects assembled the panels into a cube—one that would extend its own narrative by creating fresh space for art and culture. Today, the spray-painted precast concrete panels form a striking façade for the intimate exhibition space, their potential fully realized. The art cube now hosts literature, music, and art programming, and has earned an unusual distinction: it's been officially designated as a registry office by the municipality of Bischofsheim.
