Living in the Green

A Harmonious Garden Oasis That Embraces the Slope

Fruit trees, berry bushes, a swimming pool, and lush perennial borders alongside ornamental grasses. Together, these elements create a garden that delivers not just abundant, healthy snacking opportunities for the family, but also a refined yet natural retreat offering relaxation and wellness by the water. "The clean lines and thoughtful color palette establish a serene atmosphere in this urban garden," explains Jochen Gempp of Jochen Gempp Garden Design, reflecting on his design approach for this Frankfurt homeowner.

Realizing all of the client's wishes proved challenging. He envisioned a contemporary family garden complete with a pool, privacy, abundant blooms, an herb garden, natural elegance, and functionality for the children. Neighboring structures, limited space, and a height change of more than a meter created significant design constraints. Yet the landscape architects rose to the challenge: they transformed the retaining walls—necessary to manage the elevation changes—into striking design features. The pool walls, crafted from natural stone, exemplify this approach beautifully. Beyond their structural purpose, the integrated water feature elegantly merges function with aesthetics. "The result is the privacy you need to fully enjoy your pool," Gempp notes. Evergreen topiary serves the same dual purpose, functioning as both a privacy boundary and an architectural accent.

Bold geometry and clean lines impart a sense of openness, calm, and sophistication to the garden, built by Gärtner von Eden Rhein-Main-Taunus Schmahl. "We calibrated every material's color to achieve visual harmony throughout," Gempp explains. The garden's palette was intentionally coordinated with the home's architecture and interior design. Generous planting zones ensure an exuberant seasonal display, while the front garden and driveway were reimagined as functional spaces—the latter doubling as a play area for the children, extending usable garden room for the entire family.
