Striking the Balance
Where exterior and interior design engage in dialogue
The owners are passionate about nature—it's central to how they live. Their new hillside home, a terraced villa, commands panoramic views of verdant valleys, ancient castles, and rolling vineyards. The architecture thrives on these vistas and the way the surrounding landscape flows seamlessly into the interior. Every glance reveals expansive views and natural beauty, transformed throughout the day by shifting light, weather, and atmosphere.
The villa captivates through both architecture and interior design—a dynamic interplay of modern sensibilities and raw authenticity. The Rast architectural firm designed the structure, while Aboutlama crafted a comprehensive interior concept. A raw stone façade boldly contrasts the otherwise contemporary design. Panoramic windows frame the distant landscape like oversized artworks, and they open completely, dissolving the boundary between inside and out. A wraparound terrace—separated from the interior only by thermal barriers—is equally essential to the home. A striking vertical wooden core anchors the architecture, serving as the house's warm heart. Rooms orbit this central element, shaped by its presence. Light surfaces and airy elements echo throughout, yet visual connection to the landscape remains constant from every area. The seating zone glows in warm hues, enriched by treasured textile heirlooms. The sofa arrangement has no fixed orientation—inviting relaxation both inward and toward the terrace. The sculptural light above acts like a protective canopy, its form and golden glow making the seating area feel intimate and welcoming. This intentionally grounded center breathes within an airy setting. Textured leather, raw linen edges, and hand-finished stone surfaces echo the natural world.
The kitchen achieves the same harmonious equilibrium—rich, earthy surfaces unite with light, refined, and contemporary elements. A fireplace positioned centrally between cooking and dining zones becomes a focal point visible from every living area, evoking the warmth of a gathering around a campfire. Vintage furnishings and family heirlooms ground the space, creating an intentional counterpoint to the modern architecture and infusing it with soul. They strike a beautiful balance between understated warmth and bold character. Curated global artifacts reflect the homeowners' cosmopolitan spirit and worldly travels. In the bathroom, hand-finished stone edges evoke a cave-like sanctuary. Open-pored stone and naturally brushed wood create an intimate retreat—a personal refuge.
