A Throne Above the City
Exclusive Penthouse Maisonette in Mitte
In Berlin's most coveted neighbourhood of Mitte, Studio Hansen has realized a luxurious penthouse maisonette that exceeds every expectation. The upper level is devoted entirely to living spaces, while the lower floor accommodates bedrooms, bathrooms, a sauna, dressing room, and sleeping quarters. Positioned on Veteranenberg, the upper level commands virtually unobstructed views across all four cardinal directions. The north-south orientation creates a dual perspective: expansive panoramic vistas toward the south, intimate neighbourhood views to the north. The result is nothing short of extraordinary—a complete 360-degree panorama sweeping from Frankfurter Tor in the east, across Kreuzberg to the south, and continuing through Berlin Cathedral and Potsdamer Platz, all the way to the Zoo and Radio Tower in the west.
To preserve uninterrupted sightlines, walls are kept to a minimum. Floor-to-ceiling glazing wraps two sides, punctuated by a marble ledge and a concealed sideboard. The east-facing wall remains entirely solid, anchored by a deep shelving system with an offset fireplace—a focal point of architectural restraint. A minimalist kitchen emerges at one end, distinguished only by a striking red Plexiglas backsplash, the sole chromatic gesture in this serene expanse. The kitchen itself slides away entirely, revealing storage for appliances. A white kitchen island bridges toward the dining zone, which also remains visually closed off. Beyond lies the staircase descending to a radically different realm. The lower floor unfolds as a complete living sanctuary: master suite, guest quarters, dressing room, entrance foyer, guest powder room, and—at the owner's insistence—a full spa with sauna. This level transcends mere function; it's a refuge unto itself. The bathroom sits elevated by 18 centimetres, commanding the center of the floor. A sculptural freestanding tub with softened edges positions the bather to gaze through the bedroom and toward the cityscape beyond. A 96-decibel acoustic sliding panel prevents morning disturbances, while integrated blackout shades eliminate light spill. Mirrored walls echo the sleeping area. The expansive sauna—crafted in warm wood tones—becomes a private spa experience, complete with washbasin and shower. A generously proportioned rain shower, centrally positioned with city views, completes this intimate retreat.
