Adaptable Reading Spaces

White and orange create a vibrant showcase for colorful book spines

Education and culture are woven into everyday life just as naturally as shopping and dining, meeting friends and sharing experiences. Modern libraries demonstrate how seamlessly the pleasure of reading connects with the joy of playing, listening, and discovering knowledge. Welcoming spaces should be essential. After all, libraries are houses for books—and houses for people of all ages. They belong in the heart of the community. Like Karben's new library. Just five hundred metres from its predecessor, it represents a transformation. Deutsch Architekten has crafted approximately 536 m2 that celebrates both books and media while generously accommodating reading, listening, exploring, playing, teaching, and learning. Intimately connected to daily life.

A serene sanctuary emerges from the surrounding activity, defined by custom-made furniture in white-coated engineered wood. Coat racks, lockers, magazine holders, bookshelves, and book towers maintain a unified, understated presence. Even the radiators blend seamlessly into the composition with white lacquer. A second, warm accent—orange—draws the eye. Soft on the linoleum floors, vibrant on upholstered seating. The library invites relaxation with benches, work chairs, armchairs, and cozy mattresses in the children's corner. Overhead, bold orange pendant lights are part of a sophisticated lighting system offering seven distinct scenarios. Whether learning solo or in groups, reading by the shelf, or stepping onto the generous terrace—conditions are perfect. The same goes for film screenings, audiobook listening, or shared storytelling moments.

Bright and welcoming, this space radiates openness and invites both books and people to fill it. When events demand flexibility, the furniture—just 1.85 metres tall—rolls safely on dollies, ready to be reconfigured. This adaptable design philosophy extends to programming: while books and media remain central, the library hosts lectures, readings, film screenings, and even receptions and festive gatherings.

Robust Wi-Fi and additional connectivity ensure the technical infrastructure is ready for tomorrow. The library has also preserved room to grow. What began as a lending desk has evolved into a true cultural hub.
