Old Town as Inspiration

The hotel's interior design masterfully balances functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Once a palatinate seat with centuries of character, Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz offers far more than meets the eye. Nestled between Nuremberg and Regensburg, this vibrant cultural hub captivates visitors with its museums, landmarks, local breweries, regional cuisine, and historic old town. It was precisely this charm that inspired Duka Design—a Munich-area firm renowned for hotel architecture—in creating the interiors for Stadthotel Neumarkt Mitte. The hotel's colour palette draws directly from a single, defining image: the warm red roofs of Neumarkt's historic centre against a brilliant blue sky.

The project came to Duka Design through a private client recommendation, with creative freedom as the only constraint. "We began with an aerial photograph of Neumarkt and built our entire design language from that single image," says Anja Kalusche, the project's lead interior architect. "The roofs translated into warm, reddish walnut tones throughout the rooms, layered with deep blue walls and upholstered furnishings." Black metal accents—visible in shelving and desk elements—combined with blackened light fixtures, inject subtle industrial character. Light itself becomes a design tool: a custom wardrobe unit opposite the bathroom ingeniously merges lighting and hanging rail into one sculptural piece, while a pendant light suspended between bed and seating nook creates a striking visual anchor against the tinted wall. A pale herringbone vinyl floor echoes the charm of the neighbourhood's demolished heritage buildings, bridging past and present. In the bathroom, soft tiles harmonize with the tinted ceiling, while strategic azure blue accents underscore the interplay of contemporary restraint and timeless craftsmanship. If rooms embrace calming blue as their anchor, the public spaces pulse with warm reddish-brown energy. Continuous tile flooring, punctuated by patterned inlays that mimic carpet, draws the eye upward. The seating area—framed by graphic wallpaper—captures the defining motif of red roofs beneath blue sky. Reception and buffet areas command attention through black tiling paired with light wood. Along the corridors, a rhythm emerges: graphic black-and-white carpet grounds the space while shifting colour blocks optically compress the length of the hallways, adding visual vitality.
