Unlocking Potential

A former attic transformed into a bright, open-plan residence flooded with light

This spacious two-storey apartment, designed by interior architect Alexa Schraverus of designraum for a young couple, reveals the remarkable potential hidden in overlooked attics. Creating it posed a unique challenge: the building sits within a protected heritage district, requiring careful coordination of all exterior modifications. What was once a dim attic space has been transformed through strategic roof cuts, dormer windows, expansive glazing, and clean lines into a luminous, flowing residence that effortlessly accommodates diverse needs. The 160 m² apartment is defined by its commitment to transparency, bold contrasts, a cohesive colour palette, and a carefully orchestrated lighting scheme. The exceptional 5-metre ceiling height made it possible to carve out an additional lounge within the upper reaches of the attic.

The first level features a seamless flow between living spaces, kitchen, dining area, loggia, and fireplace. A dual-purpose study integrates visually with the open plan—yet remains flexible enough to be closed off when focused work demands privacy, even as evening unfolds elsewhere. Steel-glass sliding doors serve as subtle spatial dividers. The raised gallery lounge is similarly defined by a glass balustrade, maintaining visual continuity with the living area below. Only the private quarters—bedroom and bathroom—feel distinctly separate and intimate.

The lower living level showcases oak parquet in a classic herringbone pattern, honoring the building's character. Upstairs, the lounge benefits from a soft, plush carpet that invites relaxation. A gas fireplace brings effortless warmth and comfort high above the city's rooftops, while the loggia—with castle views—delivers an intimate rooftop experience. Black slats, steel frames, and a sleek black kitchen introduce contemporary edge against the period architecture. The lighting design is particularly sophisticated, playing with light and shadow to create focal points while intentionally leaving certain areas in soft diffusion.
