80 Years of Design Excellence
Jab Anstoetz looks back on an extraordinary corporate history
When discussing the quality of spaces, the conversation extends far beyond architecture alone. It encompasses atmosphere, materiality, acoustics, comfort, and the emotional impact of design. For eight decades, the Jab Anstoetz Group has developed solutions that operate precisely at this intersection—today ranking among the world's leading providers of premium interior design. What began in 1946 as a textile publisher in Bielefeld has evolved into a globally operating corporate group with a presence in over 80 countries and approximately 1,600 employees. Under the anniversary motto "80 Colourful Years," Jab Anstoetz celebrates not only its history but above all the creative diversity that continues to define the company today.
From Textiles to Holistic Interior Solutions
With a portfolio encompassing curtain and upholstery fabrics, wallcoverings, carpets and flooring, interior solar control, acoustic solutions, upholstered furniture, and home accessories, the corporate group has pursued a holistic approach for years. This enables architects, interior designers, and planners to develop comprehensive design concepts from a single source—for private residential spaces as well as for demanding contract projects. At the core lies the connection between aesthetics, functionality, and material expertise. In-house design teams develop collections that capture current trends while offering timeless design solutions. This creative work is complemented by collaborations with renowned international designers. Examples include the NIMBO upholstered furniture collection by Czech designer Lucie Koldova and the ICONS carpet collection developed in collaboration with Piero Lissoni and Olaf Kitzig.
Design as Philosophy
With the claim "The Design Company," Jab Anstoetz underscores its commitment to understanding design not as an isolated product but as comprehensive expertise. Color, materiality, texture, and function are coordinated across brands and create tailored solutions for diverse living and working environments. This philosophy is reflected in the company's ongoing evolution. Alongside established fabric and flooring collections, the portfolio now includes innovative acoustic solutions, bespoke furniture programs, and specialized interior concepts.
Traditional Craftsmanship Meets International Design Language
A particular milestone in the anniversary year is the 70th anniversary of upholstered furniture manufacturer BW Bielefelder Werkstätten. With its repositioning as BW Bespoke Works, the heritage brand gains a sharpened international identity. The new positioning captures what the manufactory has stood for for decades: bespoke solutions, artisanal perfection, and furniture crafted to last generations. The ability to have high-quality upholstered furniture reupholstered or restored years later underscores the commitment to durability and lasting value—aspects increasingly gaining significance in contemporary design culture.
Shaping the Future
Despite its international scope, the corporate group remains deeply rooted in its regional heritage. Long-term employee retention, targeted talent development, and investments in sustainable corporate structures define the company culture just as much as its commitment to responsible business practices. The use of recycled materials, the increased application of monomaterials, and alignment with the UN Global Compact principles demonstrate that design and sustainability are not contradictory for Jab Anstoetz—rather, the company views both as fundamental to creating future-proof living and contract spaces. After 80 years in business, Jab Anstoetz does more than look back on a successful past. The milestone also marks the next chapter for a design company that has shaped spaces for generations—one whose mission remains unchanged: to inspire people through quality, creativity, and exceptional design.
