Through September 22, the Frankfurt Historical Museum presents "Frankfurt's Women Photographers: 1844–2024," a special exhibition celebrating four generations of female photographers drawn to this city. Since photography's invention, Frankfurt has been a magnet for women who shaped the medium locally, nationally, and internationally. The dynamic interplay between photography and urban landscape has fostered remarkable visual diversity—spanning photojournalism, architectural and fashion photography, portraiture, theatre documentation, and experimental artistic concepts. The exhibition brings together 40 photographers whose work reveals both generational perspectives and timeless connections across every photographic genre.

Some names—Ilse Bing, Barbara Klemm, Gisèle Freund, and Mara Eggert—are internationally renowned. Yet many other accomplished photographers, influential in their own time, remain largely unknown to the broader public. The HMF devotes its entire 1,000 m² exhibition space to celebrating them, and as curator Dorothee Linnemann notes, to inspire deeper engagement with Frankfurt's remarkable photographic legacy. The exhibition extends to the present day, tracing how Frankfurt evolved from a photojournalism hub into an international center for photographic art and artists.

"Women Photographers of Frankfurt" is enriched by a robust program of events: intergenerational conversations with the photographers, film screenings, workshops, and guided dialogues. A comprehensive companion volume (320 pages, over 350 illustrations, 9 essays, and 40 biographies) is published by Wienand-Verlag and available for €45.
