Overtourism
The House of Architecture presents an exhibition
Travelling broadens the mind, creates memories and brings joy. But what impact do our holiday plans have on the built environment, the social fabric and climate change?
Tourism has brought economic growth, prosperity and cosmopolitanism to the most remote areas, thereby preventing depopulation. This is offset by negative effects such as overcrowding, inappropriate environmental impact and rising land prices. Tourist hotspots suffer from the influx of visitors, whilst other places fall into disuse. Can we plan a form of tourism that does not destroy the very things on which it depends?
This fundamental question is the focus of the new three-part discussion series organised by the Forum for Building Culture at the House of Architecture, accompanied by the exhibition “On Tourism” by the Architekturzentrum Wien and complemented by works by the artist collective Pegasus Product from the series “Weltkulturensohn”.
Exhibition opening and first talk:

Following an opening address by Prof. Lydia Haack, President of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects, the following speakers will take part in the discussion: Katharina Ritter, curator at the Architekturzentrum Wien; Dr Robert Schäfer, sociologist at the University of Basel; and Gernot Seeliger, artist at Pegasus Product in Berlin. The discussion will be moderated by PD Dr Claudia Paganini, philosopher at the University of Innsbruck.
