Bachplätzchen in Düsseldorf's Unterbilk district has received the prestigious German Innovation Award in the Public Space category. A panel of experts from the German Design Council recognized the mobility station developed by municipal subsidiary Connected Mobility Düsseldorf (CMD), selecting it from numerous innovations across multiple categories. In just eighteen months, this formerly aging square transformed into a dynamic, multifunctional destination. The mobility station's development also improved traffic flow around Bachplätzchen for pedestrians and cyclists, significantly enhancing safety. New green spaces, seating areas, and a renovated kiosk and outdoor dining zone have revitalized the neighborhood's appeal and livability. By involving residents and stakeholders early in the planning process, the team ensured local voices shaped the final design—making the mobility station responsive to genuine community needs from day one. Building Düsseldorf's Mobility Network Mobility stations like Bachplätzchen are essential to establishing accessible transportation alternatives in urban areas and bringing mobility options directly to residents' neighborhoods. Düsseldorf currently operates eleven mobility stations, with stations at Rath Mitte S, Drususstraße, Engerstraße, Fürstenplatz, and Hamm S—plus additional Pempelfort district locations—launching later this year. The city aims to complete 100 mobility stations by 2035. Beyond this Innovation Award, Düsseldorf was also recognized last year with the iF Design Award for the stations' outstanding design.
