Our House

Artistic Perspectives on Living

The Museum Giersch at Goethe University occupies a building with a rich history: constructed as a residential villa in 1910, it later served as the headquarters of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce before becoming a museum in 2000. The building's original residential character remains tangible in the atmosphere of its spaces—and serves as the conceptual foundation for the exhibition "OUR HOUSE. Artistic Positions on Living." Few subjects are simultaneously as private and public, as personal and political as the home itself. How do we live? What housing can we afford, and how do we shape our spaces? These are the questions explored by the participating artists in their works. The exhibition functions as a shared living space: each artist "moves into" individual gallery rooms with their work.

On the ground floor and stairwell, Zilla Leutenegger's site-specific installations investigate the villa's residential history. The first and second floors contain nine "shared rooms"—each presenting a distinct approach to the subject of dwelling. Matthias Weischer treats living space as an aesthetic stage, while Susanne Kutter dismantles it with deliberate brutality. Frankfurt photographer Inge Werth documents bedrooms across diverse social strata. Robert Haas, also a photographer, captured abandoned apartments of Jewish Viennese citizens who fled in 1938, recording them on behalf of the residents. The exhibition also engages pressing contemporary issues: Francisca Gómez examines the precarious housing conditions facing refugees, while Karolina Horner and Elizabeth Ravn confront the challenges of pandemic lockdowns. Jana Sophia Nolle and Jakob Sturm address Frankfurt's specific housing realities. Marcus Morgenstern and his team have designed an immersive spatial concept for this temporary shared residence, encompassing a kitchen on the ground floor and a living room on the first floor—an inviting space where visitors are encouraged to pause and engage.
