One Street

Exhibition in public space explores the potential of Graf-Adolf-Straße

Graf-Adolf-Straße is the most direct link from the main railway station to the Rhine – brimming with potential yet facing real urban challenges. Originally envisioned as a grand civic boulevard, the 1960s car-centric urban planning fragmented it into disconnected sections. Today it reads as a fractured landscape: bustling retail strips sit alongside vacant storefronts, cultural institutions, modest parks, and scattered inner-city housing – all strained by relentless traffic. The project "Eine Strasse" (One Street) reimagines the city centre's future as a hub for inclusive urban life. How can neighbourhoods evolve into layered urban spaces that genuinely reflect their diverse residents, rather than serving purely commercial interests? How can they foster genuine balance between commerce, culture, and community engagement – weaving residents, committed entrepreneurs, and cultural players into a living ecosystem? The exhibition intervenes across both public space and adjacent buildings, presenting compelling examples of how Graf-Adolf-Straße's fragmentation can become a cohesive urban place. An immersive route winds through artistic installations, revealing hidden corners, forgotten locations, and intimate parks and squares overshadowed by traffic. Running from 8 June through 18 August, the exhibition unfolds alongside a dynamic programme of events, performances, concerts, and urban walks. We invite all visitors to experience this street – often dismissed as merely a traffic thoroughfare – as a complex urban fabric demanding fresh vision for tomorrow.
