As part of the 18th German Sustainability Award (DNP), the "German Sustainability Award for Architecture" is being presented once again. Together with the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), the German Sustainability Award Foundation is searching for pioneering architectural projects for the 13th consecutive year – projects that advance the sustainable transformation of the construction sector through innovative solutions and strategic vision. The submission deadline is 6 June 2025.
Since 2012, the DNP and DGNB have championed outstanding sustainable architecture, underscoring the construction and real estate sector's vital role in driving resource-conscious, energy-efficient, and future-ready development. The award is presented in collaboration with the Federal Chamber of Architects, the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, and CAPAROL. "Sustainable architecture holds tremendous transformative power," notes Prof. Amandus Samsøe Sattler, DGNB President. "Innovative strategies, integrated planning, climate-conscious building practices, and the use of circular materials create buildings that are future-proof, environmentally responsible, and adaptable. These are precisely the pioneering projects we're seeking." The 2024 award went to Collegium Academicum Heidelberg for its exemplary integration of climate-conscious construction, socially equitable housing, and flexible design. Federal Minister of Construction Klara Geywitz presented the award to DGJ Architektur. In 2025, a new outstanding project will be recognized for advancing transformation in the construction sector.
Submissions are now open to builders, architects, and end-users seeking to showcase sustainable German buildings. Eligible entries include new construction, retrofitted existing buildings, or comprehensive renovations completed within the past five years that serve an active public purpose – whether as public-facing spaces, workplaces, or residential units. Surrounding landscapes and outdoor spaces are also evaluated as part of the assessment. For the first time this year, the winning project will be announced at a dedicated DGNB event focused on sustainable architecture. At the 18th DNP Congress on 4 and 5 December 2025 in Düsseldorf, a highlight film celebrating the German Sustainability Award for Architecture will feature prominently in the programme.
